Webwork 8: LIFE Magazine

  • LIFE Magazine was a publication that chronicled and stimulated America's passions for 37 years.
  • In the early thirties, a wonderously portable 35mm camera was developed that could take pictures of most anything under the sun.  For Henry R. Luce and his colleagues at Time Inc. that was the start for a new publishing venture.
  • LIFE emerged full-blown in November 1936, and journelism was changed forever.
  • LIFE Magazine brought the world to the readers in a way never attempted before.  t's images demand an emotional response.
  • Unlike other magazines that are forged around writers and editors, LIFE has authentically been built around photographers.  Being a LIFE photographer was a BIG DEAL!
  • The motto of the first issue of LIFE was, "While there's Life, there's hope."
  • The format of LIFE in 1936 was an instant classic: condensed text captions for 50 pages of pictures.  What a good idea, right?!?!?!?
