Web Work 7-Judy Dater

Judy Dater


Judy Dater is one of the most interesting photographers that we have here in the U.S. She is very well known for her famous image called Imogen that was published 1974 that featured an elderly women named Imogen Cunningham. Imogen Cunningham is one of the first women photographers in the world.

Dater was born in 1941 in Hollywood, CA and then grew up in Los Angeles, CA. Before moving to San Francisco, CA, Dater studied art and then moved to San Francisco to take a course with Jack Welpott, whom she later married. Both the couple's published a joint work in 1975, titled as Women and Other Visions. By the early 1980's Welpott and Dater were better recognized.

By 1964, Judy Dater met her all time favorite photographer that has inspired her, which is Imogen Cunningham. By 1979, just three years after Cunningham's death, Dater published a book about both Dater's and Cunningham's photographic work and a Portrait that contained many interviews of Cunningham's contemporaries.

In 1979, Dater recieved the award of Guggenhiem award. She also publish two more futher books called Body and Soul (1988)and Cycles(1994).
