Web Work 8 :: Lee Miller • Born April 23, 1907 and died at the age of 70 on July 12, 1977 • Poughkeepsie, New York is where she was born along with her two brothers • Her father was German and her mother was Canadian, Irish, and Scottish • Her father used her as a model for his amateur photography • At the age of 8 she was raped when she was staying with a family friend in Brooklyn and soon after she learned she contracted gonorrhea • Was introduced to photography at a young age because her father used her as a model • Her father photographed her in a stereoscopic and Lee was nude in these photos • At the age of 19 she was confronted by the founder of Vogue magazine which launched her modeling career • She was on the cover of the magazine in March of 1927 • Over the next couple of years she became the most sought out model in New York • Her next career was photography; in 1929 she went to Paris to apprentice Man Ray who said he did not accept students. She became his assistant. • While in Paris she opened her own photographic studio she often took over Ray’s fashion assignments giving him more time for his painting • Along with Ray, Miller re-founded the photo technique of solarisation • She was a very prominent person in the surrealist movement • In 1932 she left Ray and returned to New York to build her portrait and commercial photography studio • Her brother Erik was her darkroom assistant • 1934 she left her studio behind to marry and Egyptian businessman • During this time she did not work as a professional photographer, but continued shooting photographs in Egypt • “Portrait of Space” was shot in Egypt and is considered one of her most surrealist image groups • It was then put in an exhibition in 1955 http://www.leemiller.co.uk/index.aspx
