Part A:



Sebastiao Salgado



Sebastiao Salgado was born on February 8, 1944 in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Before becoming a photographer, Salgado studied to be an economist at the University of Sao Paulo. After earning a master’s degree there, Salgado worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization. It was during this job, when he traveled to Africa for the World Bank, that he considered becoming a professional photographer. In 1973, he made the switch to photography and started working for Sygma, a photo agency, and Gamma, based in Paris. In 1994 he formed the agency Amazonas Images in Paris. He has become well known for his social documentary photography of developing contries’ workers. His photographic work has brought him around the world to over 100 countries. His photography has been published in numerous books including: Other Americas (1986), Sahel: l’homme en detresse (1986), Sahel: el fin del camino (1988), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations and Portraits (2000), and Africa (2007). His work tours around the world, to be viewed by people of many countries and cultures. In 2004, Salgado began “Genesis”, a project that consists of pictures of landscapes, wildlife, and cultures that continue to live according to their ancient traditions. In this work, Salgado seeks to reconnect humanity with nature. Salgado’s most famous photographs are of Serra Pelada, a gold mine in Brazil. In 2007, Salgado displayed some of his photographs of coffee workers from India, Guatemala, Ethiopa, and Brazil to raise people’s awareness of the conditions these people work in to make coffee for millions of peoplearound the world. Salgado is still an active photographer today and continues to work on various projects.

Charles Nègre, Chimney Sweeps Walking  c. September-November 1851, salted paper print, 15.2 x 19.8 cmThis is a photograph by Charles Negre of three chimney sweeps.
