Web Work 5 :: Charles Sheeler






WEB WORK 5:: CHARLES SHEELER



• Was a painter became a photographer in 1912 to make a living
• Started by photographing buildings done by Philadelphia Architects’
• In 1919 he moved to New York where he partnered up with Paul Stand on Mannahatta a film
• Sheeler’s a paintings and photographs were recognized for being in the film
• His work both painting and photographs were very high detailed Precisionist style
• American artist and founder of American modernism and one of the master photographers in the 20th Century
• Born July 16, 1883 in Philadelphia where he attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art
• 1900 to 1903 Sheeler went to Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under William Merritt Chase
• 1908 found his success as a painter exhibiting at the Macbeth Gallery
• 1909 Sheeler traveled to Paris and saw the popularity of cubism rising and discovered he couldn’t make his living on Modernist painting
• Took up commercial photography with a focus on architecture
• Sheeler owned and lived in a farm house in Doylestown, Pennsylvania Morton Schamberg lived in the house with him
• The farm house was very prominent in Sheeler’s photography it was called it “his cloister”
• Self proclaimed precisionist
• Precisionist:: this term emphasized the linear precision Sheeler had in his depictions
• He was hired by Ford Motor Company to make paintings of their factories

A photographer that I ran into is Mike Overlin, he is a huge inspiration to me as he has been both a musician and photographer for most of his life. He started both while he was in highschool. His work is breathtaking and he has a nice collection.
